Yet another batch of SunSoft hell this week on Retro Game Master: The Wing of Madoola. Released December 18, 1986 for the Famicom and later as part of the SunSoft Memorial Series vol. 3 available on the Playstation 1, The Wing of Madoola and is said to draw inspiration from the OVA Leda: The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko. Coincidentally, last week’s challenge The 53 Stations of the Tokaido, was also featured in the SunSoft Memorial Series vol. 3. The story goes like this: long ago, in the kingdom of Badham, there was an object known as the Wing of Madoola which would give its possessor unlimited powers. A wise man obtained the Wing of Madoola and hid it deep beneath the Earth in order to prevent more wars being fought in pursuit of this item. A member of the ruling family, Darutos, find the location of the Wing of Madoola, betrays his family and uses the artifact to summon demons in hopes of ruling the world. There are 16 stages that the player character, Lucia, must fight through, occassionally picking up relics along the way that make the character more powerful. The gameplay is reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda II: Link’s Awakening, meaning there’s a lot of side-scrolling exploration while swiping at enemies with a sword.
