FBI Director wanted to talk about Russian attempts to influence election last summer, Obama said no?
The following according to Newsweek:
James Comey wanted to reveal information about Russian attempts to influence the 2016 US Presidential election last summer but the Obama administration wanted a “more coordinated effort” between agencies before going public with such information. Now deeply involved in the “Russiagate” investigation, the FBI Director has remained the focus of ire for Democrats who remember his investigation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, including his infamous October reveal that many analysts and laypeople alike believe impacted the election in a negative way for Hillary Clinton, allowing an outsider candidate like Donald Trump to win an electoral victory while losing the popular vote by more than 3 million. According to Newsweek, the FBI Director wanted to reveal information about potential Russian government interference in the election in July, months before his October 7 revelation that the bureau was still investigating then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
According to Newsweek,
“He had a draft of it or an outline. He held up a piece of paper in a meeting and said, ‘I want to go forward, what do people think of this?’” says a source with knowledge of the meeting, which included Secretary of State John Kerry, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Department of Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson and the national security adviser Susan Rice.”

The White House wanted a coordinated effort among the intelligence agencies, believing a statement by one person in an op-ed would be regarded as just that, the opinion of one individual. The piece would have probably seen print in The New York Times and would have included much of the same information revealed in the January 7, 2017 report on Russian activities with regard to the 2016 US Presidential election, according to Newsweek. According to the report, “Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton and harm her electability and potential presidency.”
Hillary Clinton supporters are noticeably disturbed by the revelation of White House-dawdling on an issue of such importance, a furor that has consumed much of the political coverage since January. “This raises a lot of questions,” says Jarad Geldner, a senior adviser for the Democratic Coalition Against Trump, which filed a complaint with the Department of Justice’s Office of Professional Responsibility over Comey’s disclosures about the Clinton email probe according to Newsweek. “That raises the question of why Comey or [the Department of Justice] or the White House felt that it was OK to hold that [July] press conference on Hillary Clinton’s emails but not to go public with this.”

Sources according to Newsweek reveal that it was the White House’s unresponsiveness to Comey’s requests about publishing the article that led to its lack of publication, saying the White House did what they usually do, “nothing.” A spokesperson for former US President Barack Obama was unavailable for comment at the time of the publication of the Newsweek article.
